Without a doubt, the Indian frankincense of the Boswellia serrata tree is the most extensively researched variety, enjoying an ancient tradition, both in medicine and ritual. Described in the “Bhava Prakasha”, a centuries-old Ayurvedic book, the Indian frankincense shallaki was recommended as a medical remedy.

Indian frankincense is also very well known here in Germany, as it is the only type that has undergone drug testing and is therefore available for purchase as a health remedy.

When burned, it gives off more smoke than other varieties and smells much spicier.

Other names and synonyms are Boswellia balsamifera, Boswellia thurifera, Indian frankincense, Salai, Salai Gugul, Guggal, Shallaki, Luban, and sometimes Frankincense Dhoop.
